Tanaiste’s lawyers to seek injunction against publication of Magill

Lawyers for the Progressive Democrats leader, Mary Harney, have been granted leave to seek an injunction against Magill Magazine.

Tanaiste Harney is challenging an allegation in the magazine’s current issue that she was ordered by the Flood Tribunal to disclose her financial records.

Lawyers for Mrs Harney will seek to gain an injunction to restrain publication and distribution of the current issue of Magill magazine at 2pm today.

They say claims by the magazine are “untrue and defamatory”.

Before being granted leave to seek the injunction, Senior Counsel for Ms Harney, Sean Ryan, told the court that the allegation had also been dismissed by solicitors for the Tribunal.

He said the PD leader was extremely “upset and distressed” by the contents of the Magill magazine.

He added that Mrs Harney and her party were continuing to suffer damage due to its publication.

Mr Ryan said that if publication of the material were to continue, irreparable damage would be done to the Tanaiste’s name and her election prospects.
