Council seeks to increase female TDs number

The National Women’s Council has launched a campaign to get more women elected to Government in the upcoming general election.

The council said a lack of women at decision-making level in Government has had a negative effect on the prioritising of policies which affect women, such as childcare, health issues and employment.

The NWC said a determined effort could see 30 female candidates elected to fill one-quarter of all Dail seats.

Despite this, the council also voiced concern that in 10 constituencies, no women are running for election.

It accused the political parties of failing to nurture female politicians.
