Police in the North have revealed that a 19-year-old girl who was raped in Belfast at the weekend was a student from the Republic.

The girl had travelled across the border with a number of friends on a field study trip. Police said she went to a city centre pub in Belfast on Friday night and left at around 12.30 on Saturday morning.

Almost two hours later, she was dropped off at the youth hostel where she was staying on the Donegal Road by a man believed to be a taxi driver.

By that time, she was in a distressed state and police now want to urgently speak to the driver. They have also appealed for any other witnesses to come forward.
