The two gardaí who died in Dublin early today were trying to prevent other motorists coming into contact with a speeding stolen car.

Garda spokesman John Farrelly said: "They had just crossed the road when they were hit side on at full impact by the Mazda car. They were driven some 30 yards and as a result of the impact, lost their lives."
