Fine Gael has called on the Tanaiste, Mary Harney, to strengthen the powers of the Director of Consumer Affairs to ensure that motorists are not ripped off by filling stations.

Party spokesman Charlie Flanagan said he has seen differences of up to 10 cent in the price of a litre of petrol and said this could translate as a difference of €6 per tank of petrol.
