Two men arrested in relation to Castlereagh raid

Police in the North have arrested two more people in connection with the break-in at Castlereagh police station in east Belfast two weeks ago.

One man was arrested in Belfast, while the second, believed to be a prominent republican and former hunger striker, was detained in Derry.

On Saturday, six people were arrested in connection with the raid, but five were released without charge and one was charged with a matter unrelated to the Castlereagh incident.

The police have said they believe the IRA was involved in the robbery, which targeted the Special Branch office in the high-security Castlereagh complex.

However, republicans believe the British security forces were involved in the theft and said the arrests of republicans in connection with the matter is an attempt to cover up this involvement. Mitchel McLaughlin, Sinn Fein’s national chairman, said the arrests are totally unacceptable.
