Millions saved in social welfare fraud crackdown

The Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs has announced savings of €269m last year.

The Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs has announced savings of €269m last year.

The savings come as a result of social welfare fraud investigation, which saw a total of 177 cases forwarded to the Chief State Solicitor's office.

Unemployed benefit fraud realised the largest amount of savings, with one parent family payments and illness benefit also gathering significant savings.
