Govt has 'grave concern' about Ugandan executions

The Government is tonight is expressing 'grave concern' about the execution of two soldiers for the murder of Irish priest Fr Declan O'Toole in Uganda.

Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Liz O'Donnell, said once the Government learned of sentences, it made an appeal for clemency through the Irish embassy in Kampala.

However, the executions went ahead regardless.

Minister O'Donnell said the haste of the trial has led to suspicions that not all the facts were ascertained and that the Government will use all channels to try and establish what happened.

Uganda is a priority aid country for Ireland.
