Two Ugandan soldiers have been executed by firing squad after being convicted by military tribunal of murdering an Irish priest and his two local companions.

31-year-old Fr Declan O’Toole, a native of Co Galway working with the Mill Hill Missionaries in Uganda, was shot dead at a roadblock in the north-east of the country last Thursday.

His alleged killers, a corporal and a private in the Ugandan army, were convicted of the murder yesterday and executed in front of a 1,000-strong crowd. Irish officials and the Mill Hill Missionaries are reportedly 'surprised' at the speed of the conviction and sentencing and are worried that the circumstances surrounding Fr O’Toole’s death were not fully investigated.
