A man has appeared before a special sitting of Sligo District Court this afternoon in relation to a fatal stabbing in Sligo town yesterday.

A man has appeared before a special sitting of Sligo District Court this afternoon in relation to a fatal stabbing in Sligo town yesterday.

Patrick McGrath, who is in his late forties, was charged under Section Four of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person's Act and was remanded in custody to appear before the court again next Wednesday.

McGrath is originally from Galway and is described as being somewhat of a drifter; he was arrested following the stabbing of a man in Holborn Street in Sligo at lunchtime yesterday.

James Murphy, 50, from Co Tyrone died from the wounds he received to the abdomen.

He died at around 5pm in Sligo General Hospital.
