One feared dead in car sea plunge

At least one person was feared dead after a car plunged off a pier and into the sea, gardai said today.

A crane was taken to the pier near Inveran, Co Galway, and pulled the vehicle from the sea bed, said a police spokesman.

‘‘It appears that the car has gone into the water from a pier and there was at least one person in the car as far as we know,’’ he said.

Gardai said later that officers and coastguards had recovered the body of a man thought to have been in his 80s from the vehicle.

The body was taken to University College Hospital, Galway, where a post mortem examination would be performed.

The Sligo-registered car plunged into the sea some time last night.

It's thought that the body could be that of an eighty-year-old man who has been missing from his home in Ballisadare in Sligo since yesterday morning.
