A military helicopter has had to make a forced landing in the South Armagh area.

A police spokesman says the helicopter came down in a field near the village of Jonesborough around 10.30am and it is believed there are casualties.

An Army spokesman said: "All we can confirm is that a military helicopter has made a forced landing in South Armagh and details are frankly very sketchy."

The spokesman said there was no question of any terrorist involvement in the incident, adding: "We can definitely rule that one out."

Army helicopters have begun ferrying the injured to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry where emergency procedures are in place.

Newry and Armagh Ulster Unionist Assembly member Danny Kennedy said he believed it was a major incident.

"We don't know yet how serious the injuries are but it appears to be an emergency situation," he added.
