The parents of 650 pupils at a secondary school in Co Mayo will begin supervising the students this morning after a mini-riot in the school yesterday.

Pupils at the Ballyhaunis Community School began throwing food and water and damaging school photographs yesterday as non-teaching staff took over supervision and substitution duties due to the ASTI’s industrial action.

At an emergency meeting with management last night, parents agreed to supervise today in an effort to maintain order.

All other schools reported little or no disruption as a result of the ASTI’s decision to withdraw from supervision and substitution duties as part of its long-running campaign for a 30% pay rise.
