A "profoundly deaf" young man was left for dead in an isolated country laneway after being badly beaten with a hatchet, a murder trial jury heard today.

Mr Peter Charleton SC was describing the scene at Garraun, Ballinahinch, Newport, Co Tipperary where the body of Mr John Carroll, 21 was discovered on December 4, 1998 by a local farmer.
