Labour critical of Government's inaction on racism

The Labour Party has criticised the Government’s record on racial issues after a Chinese national died in Dublin last night in a suspected racial assault on Monday.

The 29-year-old man suffered head injuries after a gang of Irish youths attacked him with an iron bar in the Beaumont Grove area.

He was taken to nearby Beaumont Hospital, where he died last night.

Gardai arrested two youths in connection with the assault, but they were later released without charge.

Labour’s deputy leader, Brendan Howlin, said Justice Minister John O’Donoghue has not fulfilled his promise to review incitement to racial hatred legislation, which he made following another racial assault in Dublin some time ago.
