One arrested following lorry hijacking in Dublin

A man is in custody in Monaghan following a bungled hijacking in Dublin city centre.

The man was arrested after the stolen articulated truck crashed into a car, injuring a woman.

He was returning to Dublin after dumping the driver of the hijacked lorry in Monaghan.

The lorry was making its way through the city centre when the driver was held up at gunpoint.

The truck was carrying a consignment of soft drink vending machines.

Somewhere between Dublin and Monaghan the container and machines were off-loaded.

They have not been recovered and Gardai are refusing to say whether the wrong lorry was targeted.

After dumping the shaken driver in Monaghan the man, now driving only the tractor unit, made his way back to the capital.

The bungled raid went wrong a second time when he was involved in an accident.

A woman injured in the crash is in a serious condition in Monaghan General Hospital.

The driver who is said to be in his late thirties and from Dublin fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later.

He is being held under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at Monaghan Garda Station.
