Old notes will be buried

As the punt starts its final weekend today, plans were disclosed to bury the old notes on environmental grounds.

The pound will be replaced by the euro on January 1, although the outgoing cash will continue to circulate alongside the common European money denomination for a further six weeks before losing legal tender status.
