No giveaways in McCreevy's Euro budget

Finance minister Charlie McCreevy will today present his first budget statement without the backing of benefits generated by the Celtic Tiger economic boomtimes.

A sequence of unfavourable indicators and forecasts, lower-than-anticipated tax returns and a series of job losses in line with the international downturn have conspired, in alliance with global events, to end a run of generous giveaway budgets.
