Road and rail links between Northern Ireland and the Republic were closed last night during a security alert.

Police said the railway line between Belfast and Dublin was closed near Newry after a number of telephone warnings were received.

A lorry was also hijacked by a number of men near Kileen Bridge on the northern side of the border and set alight outside the town, forcing closure of the A1 Road between Newry and Dublin.

Motorists travelling from either side of the border were forced to take a diversion.
