The Northern Ireland Assembly was today at the centre of a scare over a suspect package.

Proceedings were delayed as Stormont security officials examined the package received in the central mailing room minutes before Assembly members were due to appear in the chamber.

Assembly Speaker Lord Alderdice told MLAs the proceedings were delayed because ‘‘an area to the rear of the building is sealed off’’.
