Stobie due on Finucane murder charges later today

A former UDA man and self-confessed RUC double agent is expected to face charges of murdering Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane in a court in the city this morning.

Fifty-year-old William Stobie, who was UDA quartermaster at the time of the killing in 1989, has already admitted supplying the gun that killed Mr Finucane, a public lawyer who had won several high-profile cases against the RUC.

However, Mr Stobie claims he had informed his police handlers twice that the murder was going to take place and told them afterwards who had committed it. Campaigners have long demanded a full public inquiry into the murder.
