Smith due in Lebanon later today

The Minister for Defence, Michael Smith, is due to arrive at Camp Shamrock to supervise the latest stage in the withdrawal of Irish forces from the Lebanon.

The army is pulling out of the country now that it has concluded its UN mandate to restore authority and stability.

One member of the force remains unaccounted for from the 23 years of service. Private Kevin Joyce from the 1st Infantry Battalion, Galway, disappeared following an attack on an observation post.

It is believed he was abducted and killed by Islamic militants. Private Niall Doherty from Co Kilkenny also died in the same attack.
