Slow career advancement and attractive early retirement packages are being blamed for the high number of officers leaving the defence forces, according to the Minister of Defence, Michael Smith.

The Minister made these comments at the Annual Officers' Association Conference (RACO) in Co Tipperary.

Mr Smith denied claims that a lack of challenge or reward in the military is the reason for the high numbers of leavers. Mr Smith also added Ireland remains committed to its neutrality policy and membership of the UN.
