Software firm axes 90 jobs

Ninety more job losses in Ireland's hi-tech sector were confirmed today when the Logica company, which develops mobile phone software, said there would be lay-offs at their plants in Dublin and Cork.

The move followed yesterday’s announcement of 450 redundancies by the Dublin-based Celestica mobile phone manufacturers because of the global economic slowdown.

That came on top of more than 1,000 jobs losses throughout Ireland last week and the cancellation of a project that would have created 800 new posts near the border with Northern Ireland.

Most of the Logica workforce are highly-skilled engineers. The company said around 50 of the planned redundancies would be compulsory.
