The Nortel telecommunications firm in Galway has announced plans to lay off 150 full-time workers because of a global rationalisation programme.

The factory, which employs 550 people at the Mervue Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Galway, was established in 1973 to manufacture telephone systems for the Irish and European markets.
