Garda to face firearms charge in November

A 47-year-old garda sergeant will face firearms charges next month, despite a legal attempt to have the charges against him dropped because of delays in the case.

John White, with an address in Dreenan in Ballybofey, was arrested earlier this year as a result of the Carty Inquiry into alleged garda corruption in the Donegal division.

He was subsequently charged with the illegal possession of a firearm in Burnfoot in May 1998.

Mr White’s legal team applied for the charge to be struck out today but the judge refused the application and instructed prosecutors to be ready to begin the trial on November 1st.
