The Minister for Foreign Affairs Brian Cowen has told the Mayor of New York how shocked and horrified the Irish people were at the atrocities in New York.

Mr Cowen expressed his sympathy to the American people during a meeting with the Mayor Rudolph Guiliani.

The minister said Ireland felt a deep sense of kinship with the US during this time of grief.

Mayor Guiliani promised every assistance in helping to trace Irish people missing since the terrorist attacks.

Mr Cowen is in New York for the meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday when Ireland will take over the chair.
