‘Cash needed to combat premature deaths’

A Trinity College professor has called for more cash and resources to combat premature death and fatal accidents in poor and rural areas in Ireland.

Tom O’Dowd said health and education in some areas is inadequate after research showed inequalities in death rates and health levels throughout the country.

The Department of Community Health and General Practice at Trinity College published a report today showing that people living in rural towns are more likely to die young that those living in cities.

The report also revealed that manual workers are twice as likely to die prematurely than their professional counterparts and eight times more likely to die in an accident.
