A 28-year-old Ukrainian asylum seeker has been remanded in custody at Dublin District Court charged with assaulting a Romanian man whose body was found 12 days later in a suitcase in the Royal Canal.

Igor Derjhack, with an address at Flat 12, 64 Mountjoy Square in Dublin, is the first person to be charged in connection with the death of 21-year-old Adrian Bestea.

Derjhack is accused of assaulting Mr Bestea at Flat 5, 137 Strand Rd, Sandymount in Dublin on July 8 last.

In reply to the charge, the defendant said he was not guilty.

Objecting to bail, Detective Superintendent Cormac Warden said he was not satisfied with the identity of the accused and claims Djerhack was also responsible for directing witnesses connected with the case.

He said Djerhack also told them not to contact gardai.

Det Super Warden added that more serious charges are likely to be preferred.

Djerhack was remanded in custody to appear in court again on September 14.
