44 jobs to go in Mayo

44 workers are to lose their jobs at the Volex plant in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

Volex is one of the world’s largest producers of electrical and electronic cable assemblies.

The jobs are to go because of a downturn in the market, a company spokesman said.

Bosses at the company announced two weeks ago that between 80 and 100 jobs were at risk.

An agreement on cost-saving between management and staff meant that the number of job losses could be halved.

Under the terms of the deal, about 50 staff have agreed to work fewer hours.
