Computer merger may not cut Irish jobs

A spokesperson for the Department of Enterprise and Employment has said it does not expect too much of a negative effect on Ireland from the proposed merger of Hewlett Packard and Compaq Computers.

A spokesperson for the Department of Enterprise and Employment has said it does not expect too much of a negative effect on Ireland from the proposed merger of Hewlett Packard and Compaq Computers.

Hewlett Packard is to buy out Compaq Computer in a multi-billion pound deal that is expected to lead to thousand of job cuts.

The two companies employ 4000 staff here but it remains unclear how many Irish jobs will be affected.
