There have been violent scuffles outside a Belfast Catholic school as children return to their classes after their summer break.

Riot police and troops have charged at loyalists attempting to blockade the

Holy Cross School in the Ardoyne.

An army helicopter was also hovering overhead as the protests turned violent for a time.

Most of the pupils of the girls primary school have reached the school after being escorted in by the RUC and soldiers.

The loyalists have resumed protests which started before the summer break.
