Cork faces yet another 50 IT job losses

Cork is set to face further job losses with Bourns Electronics looking at a possible 50 redundancies.

The company currently employs 280 people at the plant.

Today it was announced that 25 people would lose their jobs and if the downturn in the market continues, a further 25 job losses can be expected in October.

The job losses come because the company has decided to switch one of their production lines to Costa Rica.

SIPTU branch official, Marie Kearney, says she has met the management today to try to secure employment prospects of the remaining workforce.

"We will be meeting with workers representatives and management early next week to begin negotiations on a redundancy package for those employees who will lose their jobs," she said.

"Given the current downturn in the IT sector, employment prospects in this area are not great, so we would expect management to make a realistic offer to compensate for the loss of employment to our members."
