Double money at a Dublin ATM

Bank customers got more than they bargained for when a Dublin cash machine started dispensing double the amount they had requested today.

The mistake at the Clonskeagh branch of Allied Irish Bank is being blamed on human error after notes were loaded into the machine in the wrong order.

A spokeswoman said the fault was mended within a few hours but it is reported that a crowd had already gathered hoping to cash in on the mistake.

Catherine Burke, head of corporate relations at AIB said, “Through human error the ATM started dispensing notes in the wrong order and giving out double for a short time.

It was fixed within a couple of hours. We don’t know how many withdrawals were made and they are currently checking the transactions.

It will take a little time to work it out.” She could not comment on whether the extra money would be debited from accounts.
