The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has insisted that Ireland can avoid the worst effects of the current down-turn in the global economy if it can maintain its level of competitiveness.

Mr Ahern says that schemes such as wage control and industrial stability can give the Irish economy the much-needed edge over its rivals and help combat the threat of a slowdown.
