'Biased' TDs and Senators not qualified to hold Abbeylara inquiry
The judicial review into the Abbeylara shooting inquiry has been told that TDs and Senators are not qualified to ask questions in such a forum because they are biased.
John Rodgers SC, counsel for members of the Emergency Response Unit, told judges Kelly, Morris and Carroll that because members of the Oireachtas have to seek re-election by their constituents, they could not be seen to be independent.
Mr Rodgers added that the inquiry is unnecessary, because the Garda Commissioner Pat Byrne had presented a report to the Dail and no complaints had been made.
ERU members claim that identifying their role in the Abbeylara siege could jeopardise their role in future operations.
