Amnesty concerned with Bejing Olympics

Irish human rights groups have joined in on the concern being expressed around the world following the announcement that the 2008 Olympic Games will be hosted by Bejing.

The announcement was made by the President of the International Olympics Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, in Moscow this afternoon.

The Chinese capital fought off the challenge of Toronto, Paris, Istanbul and Osaka.

Sean Love from the Irish section of Amnesty International has said that China must improve its human rights situation by upholding the Olympics charter.

The charter states that the host should “encourage the establishment of a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity”.
