Day release programme supported by report
The report into the murder of an 81-year-old retired school teacher by a convicted killer who was on a day release from prison has maintained that inmates should still get such freedom.
The report, which was published by the Minister for Justice today, recommends that procedures must be tightened following the murder of Nancy Nolan by Thomas Murray.
Mr Murray was on day release from Castlerea prison when he killed Ms Nolan at Ballygar, Co Galway on the 14th of February last year.
The report maintains that keeping such inmates confined constantly would severely hamper the rehabilitation process.
