Row breaks out over constitutionality of poll ban

A political row has broken out as the Dail rises for its summer recess today.

The Attorney General has reportedly told the Government that banning polls seven days before an election could be unconstitutional.

However, it is also believed that members of the Government told the AG that unless it is certain that the move is manifestly unconstitutional, they intend to proceed with the legislation.

If the bill is considered to not be in keeping with the constitution, it may be referred to the Supreme Court by the President.
