The search for the Carlow man missing from the naval vessel, the LE Roisin, has been extended to cover a 60-square mile area off the east Cork coast.

Three naval vessels are leading the operation.

Petty officer TJ Doyle was last seen at 8.20am yesterday morning as the Roisin was heading for Ballycotton.

The naval vessels the Ciara, the Orlaith and the Eithne are leading the search with crews using Gemini inflatable boats to search an area centred on Ballycotton bay.

The Ballycotton and Youghal coastguard units are continuing a shore search and the Aer Corps helicopter from Waterford is also involved.

The search area has been widened today, based on computerised tidal predictions.

Weather conditions in the search area remain good, with calm seas and reasonable visibility.
