Treaty must be passed for enlargement

The President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi has insisted that the Government did not lie to the Irish people when it insisted that the Nice Treaty had to be ratified to allow enlargement of the European Union.

Mr Prodi was speaking in Dublin following a series of meetings with members of both the yes and no camps.
