600 attack police in sectarian mob fury

Shots were fired, petrol bombs thrown and police officers injured when sectarian street violence in Belfast turned into serious rioting overnight.

A day of simmering violence erupted towards nightfall with police in riot gear coming under sustained attack from crowds of around 600 people, both republican and loyalist.
