Up to 800 lorries, along with other vehicles, have taken part in a major

protest rally which converged in Ballaghdereen, County Roscommon.

The campaign is aimed at improving the condition of the N5, the main road from

Mayo and Roscommon to Dublin.

The protest was organised by frustrated road users.

Chairman of the Mayo Road Action Committee Michael Holmes said that people are not prepared to accept a promise that the road will be upgraded by 2019.

They want this date brought forward to 2006 and say that anything less than that will not be acceptable.

The group has also threatened to run 'road candidates' at the next general election.
