RUC officer injured after 70-strong mob attack

An RUC officer received head wounds during loyalist rioting in Portadown overnight.

The police were trying to remove a burning barricade in Corcrain Road area of the town when they were pelted with rocks and bottles by a crowd of around 70 youths.

Two petrol bombs were also thrown as tension in the area mounts ahead of this year's march at Drumcree, which is scheduled for July 8.

The Parades Commission has yet to rule on whether the parade can return to Portadown along the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road.
