Uninsured drivers cost the Irish motoring public up to £95m last year, according to figures from the Irish Insurance Federation.

The new figures show that drivers without insurance account for 9% of the cost of all motor insurance claims each year.

Any claims against uninsured drivers are met by the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland, which is funded by the insurances fees of all motorists.

This knock-on cost to insured drivers is estimated to be worth about £57 for each policy.
