Haughey spent £3m in 11 years

The Moriarty Tribunal has heard that former Taoiseach Charles Haughey spent over £3m in 11 years.

A list of Mr Haughey's expenditure between 1985 and 1996 was read out to the tribunal.

In 1995, for example, he spent £434,000. The previous year he had spent £320,000, £5,000 less than in 1989.

Mr Haughey also went through £16,000 in January 1991 alone. The money was paid out by a bill-paying system of accountants.

Mr Haughey has insisted he has no recollection of where the money came from.

He referred the team to the McCracken tribunal, where it emerged that former Dunnes Stores supremo Ben Dunne had given £2m to Mr Haughey via his accountant, the late Des Traynor.
