Celia Larkin spoke to cardinal last week

It is being reported today that Celia Larkin met, shook hands with and spoke to Cardinal Desmond Connell at last Monday's state reception which has sparked a storm of controversy.

The reports come as a survey shows the country is split over whether or not the Taoiseach's partner should be given the title 'First Lady'.

A spokesman for Cardinal Desmond Connell is confirming that contrary to reports during the week he did not only meet Celia Larkin at Monday's reception - they also shook hands and spoke.

The news is a fresh twist in the affair that has sparked furious debate in the past six days.
