Former IRA chief of staff dies in hospital

The former chief of staff of the Provisional IRA, Sean MacStiofain, has died in hospital aged 73 after a long illness.

The former chief of staff of the Provisional IRA, Sean MacStiofain, has died in hospital aged 73 after a long illness.

London-born MacStiofain was in charge of the Provisionals after its split from the Official IRA at the start of the Troubles.

He died in Our Lady's Hospital in Navan, Co Meath last night.
