The Shannon-based coastguard helicopter is on its way to University College Hospital in Galway following a dramatic early morning rescue in the Atlantic.

A 47-year-old Spanish fisherman suffered third degree burns on board the vessel - the "Ilha Brava" - 240 miles west of Blacksod Bay in Co Mayo.

The rescue took place so far off the Irish coast, the helicopter had to stop to refuel on both legs of the journey.
