A Nigerian national has been jailed for 12 years by Cork Circuit Criminal Court after pleading guilty to drugs offences.

A Nigerian national has been jailed for 12 years by Cork Circuit Criminal Court after pleading guilty to drugs offences.

Mysella Chillis of 70 Manor St, Waterford, was arrested at Cork Airport on April 15 last.

Det Sgt Garda Michael Cummin told the court that the defendant went to meet a woman at the airport who was flying in from South Africa with the drugs.

Her case was intercepted at Customs and gardai were alerted after which Chillis was detained.

Det Sgt Cummin said it was the second such shipment in 16 months involving an organised operation of which Chillis was the Irish connection.

The defendant had been living in Waterford since May 2000 and was seeking asylum.

The cannabis is believed to have been intended for sale in Waterford and the southeast.
